Printing and the Mind of Man - John Carter, Percy H. Muir, Denys Hay

1967 - Cassell and Company Ltd, London - First Edition
An excellent first edition of John Carter and Percy H. Muir’s famous and essential bibliography, described by Libreria Alberto Govi as a ‘a cultural history seen through the most important books ever printed. No other work shows better the significant impact of “the book” on the history of mankind.’

The book-length edition of a catalogue of an exhibition held in London in 1963 presenting copies from private libraries and collectors like Ian Fleming outlines the fields of human knowledge in more than four hundred printed works from Gutenberg’s Bible to Albert Einstein’s theories.

The exhibition ambitiously sought to display the history of the art and craft of printing as well as “to demonstrate the impact of printing on the mind of man and the effect it has had on the history of the last five hundred years.”

A display at Earls Court concentrated on the technical side of printing, while a display at the British Museum looked more at fine printing. However, both displays had the quite novel intention of promoting the study of books for their role in advancing factual knowledge, rather than for their aesthetics.
