Gilbert, a rather self-effacing lawyer with a dry sense of humour, was well known as a natural storyteller, a good examples of which can be seen in two of these short stories in which rascally solicitors "get away with it", ‘Back on the Shelf’ and ‘Mr Portway's Practice’, they were also written in the first person.
