The Works of Rudyard Kipling - Signed - Rudyard Kipling 1914-1926 - Doubleday, Garden City - Seven Seas Edition. Number 487 of 1050 limited copies. (The counterpart to the London Bombay Edition) A handsomely bound complete set of Kipling’s works in twenty-seven volumes, the de luxe issue limited to 1,050 sets, the first volume, Plain Tales from the Hills, is signed by Kipling.

Printed at the Country Life Press, Gardem City, Long Island from Florentine Press type on special hand-made paper with watermark bearing “R [Ganesha device with lotus and swastika] K” on each second leaf.

Including such titles as
Soldiers Three, Kim, The Jungle Book, Captains Courageous, Stalky & Co., Just So Stories, The Five Nations, Plain Tales from the Hills and the Seven Seas
The Seven Seas Edition generally follows the text of The Bombay Edition; each story bears the date of its first publication, and the contents were re-edited and rearranged by the author “in the sequence in which he wishes it to remain, including new matter now for the first time collected in book form” (according to the publisher’s advertisement).

Kipling consulted with publisher Frank N. Doubleday on the paper, the “Scotch-face” type, the colour of the initial letters, the shade of the binding, and the swastika imprint. Printer and designer Walter Gillis acted as adviser on the typography.

The price was $138 a set, and could be paid for at $6 a month with delivery of each volume. The set had no illustrations, the publisher explained to one subscriber, because the author did not want an illustrator putting his own interpretation upon the stories.’ [Richards D15]
. In fact this is not quite correct as Just So Stories retains the illustrations, which were the only illustrations by Kipling himself, and as such did not contradict the publisher’s aforementioned explanation.
