The Heart of a Goof - P. G. Wodehouse 1926 - Herbert Jenkins Limited, London - First Edition, in second or third issue jacket (1927) It was a morning when all nature shouted 'Fore!'

Nine golf stories told by the
Oldest Member. In two of them, set in America, we meet a fine couple of fat multi-millionaires who are rivals at golf (both very bad, and arrant cheats) and rivals as collectors of golf treasures (such as J. H. Taylor's shirt stud). They play each other for high stakes. Bradbury Fisher has a baffy Bobby Jones had used in the Infants All-in Championship of Atlanta, Georgia, and he is prepared to trade it for Gladstone Bott's English butler, Blizzard, the finest on Long Island. And then back from England comes Mrs Bott, with Vosper, the butler supreme lured from the Duke of Bootle's establishment. In two stories we watch the romance of William Bates and Jane Packard, golfers, result in marriage and the birth of young Braid Vardon Bates.

‘Golf, as Sir Walter judiciously remarked, is unsuited to the novelist or indeed the writer of short stories. There is indeed one exception to this rule, Mr. P. G. Wodehouse with “The Clicking of Cuthbert” and other agreeable tales. Some approach works of genius, but then they are works of light-hearted genius.’ – Bernard Darwin.
