A Murder of Quality - John le Carré 1962 - Victor Gollancz Ltd, London - First Edition, In First Impression Dust Jacket Fielding and Jebedee were dead, Steed-Asprey vanished. Smiley—where was he?’

Le Carré’s second novel, in bright and rare first impression dust jacket. Housed in bespoke scarlet morocco leather clamshell case, with gilt lettering to spine, and black felt lining.

George Smiley is retired from the Secret Intelligence Service over events that occurred in
Call for the Dead. He gets a request for help from a wartime colleague, a Miss Ailsa Brimley, who runs a small newspaper and who gets a letter from a female subscriber predicting her own murder.

'Le Carre is simply the world's greatest fictional spymaster.' –
Newsweek.
The first impression print run was only 3,000 copies, and similar to Le Carré’s first book ‘Call for the Dead’ a large number ended up in libraries, and the delicate Gollancz covers were typically prone to damage from toning and staining, and price clipping, amongst other things.

John le Carré is the nom de plume of David John Moore Cornwell, born in Poole, Dorset, in 1931. He was a member of the British Foreign Service from 1959 to 1964, serving first as Second Secretary in the British Embassy in Bonn and subsequently as Political Consul in Hamburg. He started writing novels in 1961, and since then has published twenty-one titles.
