Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957), together with his twin Charles Maurice Detmold were English graphic artists. Due to the illness of their father, they were brought up by their uncle, Dr E B Shuldham, a naturalist and Orientalist. Thus the brothers drew animal and plant life from an early age, and debuted (aged 13) at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, with nature studies in the Japanese style. They subsequently learned techniques of watercolour etching and of colour printing with copper plates, and invested in a press for home printing. They became prolific book illustrators in the Victorian-Edwardian period with popular commissions including Kipling's Jungle Book, Aesop's Fables and The Arabian Nights. Their natural histories include Maeterlinck's Life of The Bee, Lemonnier's Birds and Beasts and Fabre's Book of Insects.
