Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm -
Kate Douglas Wiggin
1903 - Houghton, Boston and New York - First Edition
‘Rebecca was a thing of fire and spirit.... [she] was plucky at two and dauntless at five.’
A finely bound example of this classic tale about the pain of growing up, admired by authors from Jack London to Mark Twain. Beautifully written with a humorous touch.
‘When ten-year-old Rebecca Randall comes to live with flinty aunt Miranda and her sentimental sister Jane in a small town in Maine, they expect to turn her into a proper young lady. Instead, Rebecca will end up changing them.’ [Random House] First edition, fourth issue, as most copies are (although Bibliography of American Literature (BAL 22632) states this is tentative), and the fact this has a 1903 gift inscription makes this clearly printed the first year of publication. With page 325, line 9 "Don't turn in at the side"; Page 327, line 13 "October sun" for “October noon”, and in binding A with publisher's imprint on the spine in letters 1/16" high.
Provenance: A neat contemporary 1903 Christmas gift inscription to a Delia L. Hodgkins (?). Small Massachusetts booksellers label to rear pastedown.
Octavo (book size 19.2x13.5cm), pp. [4] x 327 [3]. In publisher’s green cloth, pale green lettering and illustrations blocked in colour to spine and upper cover. Condition: Fine, crisp and clean. Ref: 111991 Price: HK$ 2,500
