With this celebrated sentence Thornton Wilder begins ‘The Bridge of San Luis Rey’, one of the towering achievements in American fiction. Although we technically and correctly state First ‘American’ Edition, the London edition preceded it by only a few days.
Octavo (binding size 21x14cm), pp. 235 [3]. Finely bound in later half green morocco over publisher’s original cloth showing scene of San Luis Rey and lettering in green and black, spine with raised bands lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge with original pale green tint, original endpapers with maps incorporated into the front and cloth spine at the rear.
