Rare early Cantonese (’Punti’) and Mandarin vocabulary published by The Daily Press, compiled by Rev. Wilhelm Lobscheid (1822-1893) whose groundbreaking four volume dictionary was also published by The Daily Press two years later in 1866.
The Daily Press was the first daily English-language newspaper in Hong Kong, published from 1857 for about 80 years. Founded and edited by George M Ryder. Wilhelm Lobscheid (1822-93) was sent out by the Rhenish (Barmen) Mission to Hong Kong in 1848. He learned Chinese in Hong Kong and began helping Karl Gutzlaff, playing an important role in the opening of China to the Gospel as an adventurous pioneer missionary, whilst providing medical care.
He had remarkable work of translation, including editing translation of the Old Testament and the New Testament. Lobscheid’s English–Chinese dictionary, one of the most comprehensive versions of its kind in the nineteenth century. He continued his work as a medical doctor and pastor until his death in 1893.

Tall slim octavo (binding size 26x10.5cm), pp. [2] iv 1-106, 129-148. Lacking pages 107-128, worming to a number of pages, several of which have been restored. In contemporary black, possibly silk covered boards, spine with twin gilt rulings, re-backed with later endpapers. Condition: Good, marginal worming affecting first and last pages, with some pages repaired, lacking pages 107-128, pencil ticks and a few notations throughout, changing to ink for the last 9 pages, covers re-cased with later endpapers, marks to outer cloth.
