  Iain M Banks was born in Scotland in 1954. He first came to widespread and controversial public attention with his debut novel, The Wasp Factory, first published in 1984. Considered one of most innovative writers of his generation, Banks wrote mainstream fiction under the name Iain Banks and science-fiction as Iain M Banks. He died in 2013.
