The Winchester Edition - Jane Austen

1911-1912 - John Grant, Edinburgh - The Winchester Edition
'I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.'

A beautifully bound twelve volumes, considered to be the best collected edition of Austen’s works which includes
Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Emma, Lady Susan, The Watsons, as well as the Letters. With a portrait frontispiece to volume I.

Affectation of candour is common enough—one meets with it everywhere. But to be candid without ostentation or design—to take the good of everybody's character and make it still better, and say nothing of the bad—belongs to you alone.’

1905 - The Century Co., New York - Early Brock Illustrated Edition
'I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.'

An elegantly bound copy of one of the most loved and admired English novels of all time, enhanced by eight full-page illustrations by the brothers Charles and Henry Brock, who both worked from the same studio in Cambridge, and have come to be widely regarded as the best illustrators of Jane Austen's works.

In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.

Austen’s unmistakably witty satire of a country squire marrying off his five spirited, daughters is a wonderful tale of humour and romance.

Affectation of candour is common enough — one meets with it everywhere. But to be candid without ostentation or design — to take the good of everybody's character and make it still better, and say nothing of the bad — belongs to you alone.’

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - together with - Through the Looking-Glass, and what Alice found there - Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson], John Tenniel (illustrator)

1870 1872 - Macmillan and Co., London - Early Edition, First Edition
“Whilst Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass were intended for children “fresh from God’s hand”, it is equally enthralling and delightfully magical for adults as they follow Alice on her vibrant adventures escorted by her famous companions. Who can possibly not have been carried away into the fantastically crazy world of the Mad Hatter? Or never have heard of Tweedledee and Tweedledum? Who cannot have been struck by Carroll’s love for sophisticated play with words?.” - Stephanie Chan.

A finely bound pair, in which Tenniel’s illustrations, 42 in
Wonderland and 50 in Looking-Glass, perfectly capture Alice’s upside-down world and are considered to be his finest and most enduring achievement.

An Agatha Christie Omnibus containing The Mysterious Affair at Styles, The Murder on the Links, Poirot Investigates - Agatha Christie

1931 - John Lane The Bodley Head Ltd., London - First Omnibus Edition
Finely bound first edition of this Poirot omnibus bringing together the first three Poirot publications, the two novels novels The Mysterious Affair at Styles and The Murder on the Links, together with the short story collection Poirot Investigates.

Agatha Christie’s first novel,
The Mysterious Affair at Styles, published in 1920, was the result of a dare from her sister Madge who challenged her to write a story. The story begins when Hastings is sent back to England from the First World War due to injury and is invited to spend his sick leave at the beautiful Styles Court by his old friend John Cavendish. Here, Hastings meets John’s step-mother, Mrs Inglethorpe, and her new husband, Alfred. Despite the tranquil surroundings Hastings begins to realise that all is not right. When Mrs Inglethorpe is found poisoned, suspicion falls on the family, and another old friend, Hercule Poirot, is invited to investigate.

In Christie’s second Poirot ‘
The Murder on the Links’, published in 1923, an urgent cry for help brings Poirot to France. But he arrives too late to save his client, whose brutally stabbed body now lies face downwards in a shallow grave on a golf course. But why is the dead man wearing his son’s overcoat? And who was the impassioned love-letter in the pocket for? Before Poirot can answer these questions, the case is turned upside down by the discovery of a second, identically murdered corpse.

Poirot Investigates, published in 1924, was Christies third Poirot publication and her first collection of short stories. First there was the mystery of the film star and the diamond… then came the ‘suicide’ that was murder… the mystery of the absurdly cheap flat… a suspicious death in a locked gun-room… a million dollar bond robbery… the curse of a pharoah’s tomb… a jewel robbery by the sea… the abduction of a Prime Minister… the disappearance of a banker… a phone call from a dying man… and, finally, the mystery of the missing will.

What links these fascinating cases? Only the brilliant deductive powers of Hercule Poirot!

The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy - Hannah Glasse

1763 - A. Millar, London - Eighth Edition
A finely bound early edition of this classic 18th century cookbook, which ‘revolutionised the way the British cook’.

‘She's the first domestic goddess, the queen of the dinner party and the most important cookery writer to know about. No, not Isabella Beeton; not Delia Smith nor Nigella Lawson, but an earlier incarnation of a kitchen trouble-shooter, Hannah Glasse’ - Rose Prince,
The Independent (2006).

The Art of Cookery has a River Cafe Cookbook quality - in fact her excessive use of butter, which can have a lovely clear flavour, can be likened to the liberal dribbling of olive oil in Rogers' and Gray's recipes. The power of the book, though, is the clarity of the writing. She's authoritative but she is also intimate, treating you as an equal’ – Bee Wilson (food journalist and author).
