Magnificently illustrated six volume history and description of the British Empire’s military might at the end of the nineteenth century, including the two volume supplement for the British Indian and Colonial Forces (Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, Malta).
With the regimental bookplates of the library of Princess Louise’s Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, a regiment that played no small part in British Military history, including Sir Colin Campbell’s infamous ‘Thin Red Line’ of Sutherland Highlanders facing the might of the Russian Cavalry charge at Balaklava, and the relief of Lucknow and recapture of Cawnpore during the Indian Mutiny.
Containing 47 colour chromolithographic plates consisting of 44 full page plates and three extra illustrated title pages, mainly from pictures painted for this work by Captain H. Bunnett. Provenance: The regimental library of ‘Princess Louise’s Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. With their armourial bookplates to each volume. See volume I (p.171-5) for the history of the regiment. The plate of the ‘42nd - The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)’ is from another set, the original had been removed, perhaps whilst in possession of Princess Louise’s Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, for a regimental reason?

Last two volumes - 8; frontis, title, 6. – One extra colour title page, 15 colour plates. Condition: Very good to near fine, some darkening to spines, light wear to corners, bumping to top edges, one or two volumes with contents shaken, a few scattered finger marks.
