Memoirs of a Highland Lady – The Autobiography of Elizabeth Grant of Rothimurchus afterwards Mrs. Smith of Baltiboys 1797-1830 - Elizabeth Grant, Lady Strachey (editor) 1898 - John Murray, London - First Edition ‘No other spot ever replaced it, no other scenery ever surpassed it, no other young happiness ever seemed to approach within a comprehensible distance of our childhood at Rothimurchus.’

An elegantly bound volume of one of the most famous ladies memoirs, and continuously in print since 1898. Acutely observant accounts of her own life, as well as the rapidly changing Highland scene and society, and above all of the great Rothiemurchus estate. Written between 1945 and 1854 and originally intended simply for her family.

Edited by the author’s niece, Lady Strachey.
Elizabeth Grant (1797-1886) was born at Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, the eldest child of Sir Peter Grant, heir to the estates of Rothiemurchus. She lived most of her childhood in London, with the summer months spent on her family’s estate in Scotland. In 1827, due to her father’s financial problems, her family moved to India, where Elizabeth met Colonel Henry Smith of Baltiboys, County Wicklow. Her accounts of her life in Ireland later became significant for historians, providing evidence in understanding the effects of the Irish potato famine on communities. Grant also published numerous articles and short stories, which often appeared in the Victorian press, though usually anonymously.
