  The Venerable John Henry Gray , MA DD (1823-90) was the inaugural Archdeacon of Hong Kong, serving from 1868-78, he was also a consular chaplain at Canton (also known as Guangzhou), 1867-78, and a commissary of the Diocese of Victoria, Hong Kong. As an author he was better known for his popular ‘China, A History of the Laws, Manners and Customs of the People’.

  In what is most likely the publisher s binding (based on two other recorded copies), quarter black polished calf over matching cloth boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, all edges trimmed.   Condition: Fine in very good binding, wear to corners and spine ends with slight loss to head of spine, toning and offsetting from earlier tape to front and rear free endpapers, the front being creased.   Ref: 112036   Price: HK$ 14,000
