Souvenir Album of China. Including Four Hundred and Fifty Original Photographs - Charles F. Gammon 1908 - Denniston &, Shanghai - First Edition A rare and fine early collection of over 450 photographs printed on 100 pages by Charles Frederick Gammon, with with English titles, in the original illustrated paper boards.

American missionary Charles Frederick Gammon (1870-1926) spent seventeen years in China, he was superintendent of colportage for the American Bible Society in northern China. Gammon also held a commission from the Chinese government as a military instructor at Tianjin University and served as a lieutenant with the allied armies during the Boxer Rebellion and was at the siege of Tien Tain. He returned to the United States in 1909, giving regular lectures on his time in China, and submitting articles to various journals.

Provenance: Frederic John Eastman with his the lovely personal China-themed art-deco bookplate neatly attached and folded between pages 4 and 5. Frederic Eastman moved to Shanghai in 1926 to teach at St. John’s University, returning to America to ordained in 1935 and rector of St. Mary’s in Buffalo in 1938. Included with this book is a contemporary folded paper bag from the Nanking Photo Co.’. Not the bag that housed this book (which is slightly larger).

Oblong quarto volume (book size 28.8x22.2cm), pp. [1 (illustrated title page)] [99 (pages of photographs)] [1 (printer’s statement)] [1]. In publisher’s patterned paper covered boards, upper board with yellow dragon motif enclosing stylised lettering.
