A finely bound early and rare edition of this important collection of English fairy tales, first published in 1842, and presented here with additional rhymes, tales and introduction by James Orchard Halliwell (1820-89), the English writer, Shakespearean scholar, antiquarian, and a collector of English nursery rhymes and fairy tales.
This collection contained the first printed version of the ‘Three Little Pigs’ and a new version of the Christmas carol ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’. James Orchard Halliwell was a Shakespearean scholar and antiquary, well-known (or notorious) for his marriage to the daughter of Sir Thomas Philipps, the bibliomaniac, whose surname he added to his own in 1872. His early publications included several on nursery rhymes and children’s stories, as well as volumes on particular manuscripts.
Large octavo (binding size 23.3x16.8cm), pp. [2] xiv [2] 351 [3]. Elegantly bound in full green crushed morocco, spine with twin gilt filet bordered compartments and twin labels of black and burgundy morocco lettered in gilt, covers bordered in blind, hand-marbled endpapers, top edge gilt.
