The growth and prosperity of the Tai-Pans of Noble House, the oldest and most important trading house in Hong Kong is challenged by civil unrest, kidnappings, murder and new claimants to the Tai-Pan throne who have little respect for the unwritten rules of the colony. James Clavell (1924-1994): The son of a Royal Navy family, was educated in Portsmouth before, as a young artillery officer, he was captured by the Japanese at the Fall of Singapore. His best-selling novel, King Rat, was based on his experience in Singapore. He is also remembered for his oriental sagas, including Tai-pan, Shogun, and Noble House. Clavell lived for many years in Vancouver and Los Angeles, before settling in Switzerland, where he died in 1994.
