The Glorious Adventure - Richard Halliburton 1927 - The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis - First Edition, Second State. ‘I thought of Ulysses and his stirring drama, and then looked at my own life, imprisoned by apartment walls, surrounded by self-satisfied people who were caught in the ruts of convention and responsibility. All that seemed drab. I had tasted the drug of romantic travel, and I could not rest from it’.

Halliburton wrote these words before setting off for the blue Mediterranean, where he roamed searching for adventure and romance, both of which he was happy to report were still in abundant supply.
The second state, where the frontispiece was replaced with a portrait photograph of Halliburton, and the ghastly image of Halliburton on the dust-jacket has been replaced with a mountainous landscape.

Richard Halliburton was the most dashing and handsome adventure traveller America ever had. During the roaring 1920s and 30s he travelled the world like a whirlwind, risking his life performing daredevil stunts like swimming the Panama Canal, or diving into the accursed Mayan Well of Death, not once but twice. He was welcomed by royalty, lived on Devil's Island, and enlisted in the French Foreign Legion.

Halliburton disappeared in 1939 while trying to sail a Chinese junk from China to San Francisco, the victim of a legendary typhoon, his last message from the radio of the sinking junk was ‘Wish You Were Here’
