Theatre: A Novel - William Somerset Maugham 1937 - William Heinemann Ltd, London Toronto - First English Edition, second state. A bright sharp and near fine copy of Maugham's tribute to the vocation of an actress.   This has page 7-8 in the second state, although, as common with a number of Maugham’s works of this period, the first state is extremely uncommon, and it must have been mayhem at the printers, as they were asked to remove the original leaf, and replace it with a tipped in page on which page 7 line 12 ‘I do not eat bread’ is changed to ‘I don't not eat bread’.

One of 20,000 copies published by Heinemann, London on 22nd March 1937, the first American edition was published a few weeks earlier on the 3rd of March.
