Miller, London - First Edition This remarkable folio work contains forty-eight engraved plates of Scottish Landscapes and buildings etched by James Fittler (appointed engraver to King George III) from drawings by John Claude Nattes, each one accompanied by a detailed historic description. In addition to the more well known locations of Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands, Nattes included places such as Aberdeen, Banff, Moray and Inverness.

John Claude Nattes (c.1765-1822) - was a painter (usually in water colour) and topographical draughtsman of either French or English origin, whose works were regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy.

Provenance: John or Peter Templeman, of Dorchester, Dorset (and Fordingbridge, Hampshire), with their armourial stamp (azure on a chevron between three roses argent (silver), as many escallops sable (black); Crest, a cubit arm, erect, vested azure (dropped with gold). cuffed gules (red). holding in the hand ppr. (proper / shown in natural colour) a rose of the second, stalked and leaved vert (green)).

Oblong folio (binding size 35.8x28.6cm), pp. [2] Title [1] [2 Preface] [List of Plates] [1] 48 plates each with descriptive text page (blank verso), plate 48 with two sheets descriptive text and engraved vignette (both versos blank) [2].
  In contemporary full navy straight grained morocco, spine in five compartments titled and intricately tooled in gilt, panels with fillet borders in gilt, enclosing floral gilt orders, enclosing repeated pattern in blind, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt.   Condition: Very good, general toning to plates, heavier to double frontispiece, small single wormhole affecting second frontis, title and preface, similar single hole to rear affecting last two plates and accompanying text, in very good binding with rubbing and wear to corners and edges, endpapers creased.   Ref: 107077   Price: HK$ 14,000
