A rare work detailing the unique collection of ten large-scale models of Chinese junks, presented to the Science Museum, London, by Sir Frederick Maze, inspector-general of Chinese customs in 1938. The models were built in Hong-Kong or Shanghai by Chinese craftsmen, under the supervision of George C.L. Worcester and are accurate replicas of these sailing craft in every detail, down to the shrines and household gods. They include examples with the magical eye on the prow.
Illustrated with 18 large photographic plates, detailing the ten junks of the collection and the Fukien Sea-Going Junk model donated to the Musée de la Marine in Paris.
This copy comes with three additional loose original photographs, property of the Science Museum, titled in pencil on the back: ‘Chinese Lorcha’ (see ‘Lorcha’ plate), ‘Chinese Fish Carrying Boat from Ming Po, Broadside’ and ‘Hylain junk from China Draught and sail plan’ (see ’Model of Hainan Sea-going Junk’ plate and appendix 6). The work is missing the plate of the ‘South-China Sea-Going Junk’,
A presentation copy ‘With the compliments of Sir Frederick Maze, Inspector General of Chinese Maritime Customs and Administrator of the Chinese Lighthouse Department. 1929-1943.’ We believe copies of this work were printed in a small number for Sir Frederick Maze, and the only other copy we have seen includes the same compliments slip.

Rare and superb large folio of this very detailed celebratory account of the first successful yacht race from San Francisco Bay to Santa Cruz and a subsequent regatta across Monterey Bay from Santa Cruz to Monterey and back, it also includes a history of the club, lists of the members and a description of the fleet.
The glory of the work lies in the eight magnificent coloured lithographic plates by Gideon Denny (1830-1866), a renowned marine artist based in San Francisco. Denny's fine plates include five views of sailboats at sea during the races, one of the fleet anchored off Santa Cruz, one of the clubhouse and grounds of the Pacific Yacht Club at Sausalito, and one group portrait of the officers of the club.
Inscribed by hand to L.R. Jerome Esq. from Cornelius O’Connor the Treasurer of the Royal Pacific Yacht Club in 1884 (see plate opposite page 50). Lawrence R Jerome, an Honorary Member of the club, was a successful financier together with his brother Leonard (whose daughter become Lady Randolph Churchill, Winston’s mother), and they were instrumental in forming the New York Jockey Club. Leonard took a leading part in yachting, he gave a speech on behalf of America at Cowes, attended by the Queen. ‘One of the natural leaders of a group of famous club men and wits whose reputation has never been equalled in New York’.

Williams, one of the richest men in America, owned the ‘Warrior’ the largest motor yacht of its day at 240 foot, pipping Vanderbilt’s ‘Ara’ by 27 feet. Both men had an interest in marine research in addition to taking these magnificent world cruises, statements to the changing of the guard, Old World to New World.
A superb and large format work, Vanderbilt’s descriptions of incidents and ports of call mingle nostalgically with the photographs and exquisite colour plates. Vanderbilt also includes a brief account of his seafaring life, and the history of the Ara,
In 1921 Vanderbilt chanced to see the “Ara”, a 1918 213ft steel British Navy sloop of war, in Camper & Nicholson’s yard which appealed to him. He bought and converted her into a yacht and then “cruised” 97,446 miles before undertaking this 28,738 mile circumnavigation westward starting in New York and ending in Miami.
Vanderbilt and his wife made the entire voyage, together with a crew of 34, several guests went along for part of it. Ports of call included Havana, Hawaii, the Marshalls, Carolines, Philippines, Saigon, Singapore, Malacca, Sri Lanka, Bombay, Aden, various Mediterranean and Aegean ports, Gibralter, Tangier, Casablanca, the Canaries, Cape Verdes, Guadalupe, and Puerto Rico.
