Legendary wit and bon vivant Lucius Morris Beebe (1902-1966) was born into a wealthy Boston mercantile and banking family and, flying in the face of a hopelessly proletarian 20th Century, he lived his life in the opulence and splendour of an earlier age. As an undergraduate at both Harvard and Yale, he was an outstanding student and a rake-hell of formidable accomplishment. It was his custom to appear for class Monday morning in full evening dress, wearing a monocle and carrying a gold-headed cane. He also had a roulette wheel and a fully equipped bar in his room. At the same time, he earned distinction as an undergraduate poet and won his Master’s degree with a thesis on the poetry of Edwin Arlington Robinson.

A scarce fine first edition of Crockett’s colourful history of the Waldorf Bar and accompanying drink manual. One of the most quoted sources of cocktail recipes. Illustrated throughout by Leighton Budd.

Crockett’s lively anecdotal history, including the antics of Buffalo Bill Cody and Bat Masterson, among others who were regulars at the bar, is accompanied by his manual of cocktails, which he ‘arranged alphabetically, and in two classes. The cocktails have been set down in one list and the others, which might be classed as ‘beverages,’ have been termed ‘Fancy Potations and Otherwise’.

This is not a ‘guide’, it contains anecdotes, characters, deals, entertainers and speakeasy challenges that only someone deeply connected with the scene could piece together, and if anyone knew the night clubs of New York it was the great entertainer Jimmy ‘Schnozzola’ Durante. Performing from 17 in Coney Island dives, Manhattan slums and gangster hangouts in Harlem, moving from a Mafia club ‘The Alamo’ to open his own small establishment ‘The Durant’ (the signmaker forgot to paint the ‘e’), but this was prohibition and soon after they were raided. Durante with his by now well known partners Eddie Jackson and Lou Clayton, moved on from there to become one of the all-time great night club acts. All this before becoming a film star, radio star, and television star.....

Illustrated with 16 photographs, illustrated title page and endpapers. The fabulous and rather risqué dust jacket was illustrated by Herbert Roese.

An extremely scarce early edition of the first bartenders' guide to include cocktail recipes. In addition to listings of recipes for Punches, Sours, Slings, Cobblers, Shrubs, Toddies, Flips, and a variety of other types of mixed drinks were 10 recipes for drinks referred to as "Cocktails". A key ingredient which differentiated "cocktails" from other drinks in this compendium was the use of bitters as an ingredient, although it is not used in many modern cocktail recipes.

By the great Professor Jerry Thomas, referred to as ‘The Best Bartender of the Past’ by Harry Craddock in the Savoy Cocktail Book.

Contains 236 recipes by Jerry Thomas and 463 recipes by Schultz, with in text illustration. Publishers advertisements to front and rear and catalogue to rear. One page announcing the publication of ‘
The Bar-Tender's Guide And Bon Vivant’s Companion’ which was the new title used from 1864 onwards.
